Greetings from The Montreal Polar Bears,
First, we want to thank the greatest community on earth- the NBA and its fans, for welcoming us into this incredible league. We would like to take this opportunity to explain our backstory and our vision.
When our owner (Jordan Spurling) was made aware that the NBA was considering expansion, he knew this must become his number one priority. While most know him for starting the most successful ice cream franchise in America (Teet-2-Table) most don’t know he was a below average Division 3 basketball star. While he loves ice cream, basketball is his original passion. He sold his ice cream empire to Ben & Jerry’s for the capital to purchase an expansion team.
Upon purchasing the rights to an NBA expansion team, we knew we would be taking our talents abroad. The NBA is truly a global game, and we wanted to embrace that. After considering cities like Tokyo, Sydney, Madrid and Baghdad, we came to the conclusion that these exotic and far-away places just weren’t logistical or financially possible when taking travel and time differences into consideration. Upon visiting multiple Canadian and Mexican cities, our hearts were won by the warmth and passion for the city on Montreal, Quebec. While on our initial visit to the city, we were drowned by love, hospitality and poutine.
With a population of over 4 million residents in the metro area and only one professional sports team (The NHL’s Canadiens), we believe the city has the size and structure already in place to support an NBA team. Montreal has a unique blend of Canadian, American and French influences. It embodies our values as an organization. As a multi-language speaking city, we believe we will be able to grow the game among different communities and social classes. Montreal is now home.
Lastly, let’s address our mission. Anything less than a championship is a failure. That’s it.
We look forward to hosting our guests in “The Bear Den”. But be careful, you know what they say about waking a sleeping bear….
